TALKING POINT

Can productivity become counterproductive?

We’re quite familiar with hustle culture. Either we know someone who’s proud of working endless hours, or we’ve been that person.

While there’s nothing wrong with wanting to do our best, basing our worth on work accomplishments alone can be a problem. Why?

💻🔥 Imagine a laptop that’s forced to work at 100 per cent CPU usage. Think loud fans, heat and a cursor that’s slower than a sloth. If that’s how you feel on a daily basis, you’ll never reach your full potential.

When your brain is overworked, your productivity suffers. So, don’t sacrifice your rest hoping to get more done. Instead, prioritize your downtime and stick to it. It’s worth it in the long run — and it’s better for your health, too.

TODAY'S ADVICE

Here’s how to kill time at work — productively

bulldog

There are busy days at work, where you barely have a second to think. And then, there are quiet days, where you’re just bored out of your skull 💀

Now, you could just play Solitaire until it’s time to finish for the day. But that carries the risk of an email from HR — eek!

So, what can you do when you’re bored at work?

1. Organize your inbox. Set up dedicated folders and subfolders for various topics and categories. This will make life easier for you the next time you need to find an important email.

2. Read up on industry news. Who knows? It might help you come up with an awesome idea for the company’s next big product.

3. Help out your coworkers. They’ll appreciate it, and they could offer to return the favor when you’re next struggling with your workload. Plus, your employer will love you!

4. Clean your workspace. Introduce old documents to the shredder. Tidy those leads and cables. And run wild with a bottle of Windex.

5. Share your expertise. Write and publish an article on LinkedIn, or answer questions on Quora relating to your job. People are always looking for answers, and you’ll build your credibility.

DAILY TO-DO

✔️ Find an app or timer that helps you break your day into chunks

You might be guilty of skipping your breaks and trying to work through the day — but that will cause issues with burnout if you don’t take a small breather.

So, find a timer or app and take a short break when it goes off. Do this, and your productivity will soar!

WHAT WE'RE LISTENING TO

WELLNESS CENTRE

Diaphragmatic breathing (aka deep breaths)

Lucas rockwood

You know how people tell you to take a deep breath when you’re stressed or angry?

Deep breaths bring in more oxygen, which your body metaphorically high-fives you for. It does this by slowing your heart rate and signaling to your brain that: “Hey — we’re A-OK!”

Belly breathing isn’t just for when your coworkers irritate you, though. As yoga trainer Lucas Rockwood suggests, breathing exercises should be done throughout the day.

Add the following to your routine for better health:

💧 “Water” breathing: Inhale to a count of 4, exhale to a count of 4. Use during the day, any time.

🥃 “Whiskey” breathing: Inhale to a count of 4, exhale to a count of 8. Use at night to promote sleep.

☕  “Coffee” breathing: Exhale sharply in small bursts, 20 times in a row. Use sparingly, ie: before workouts.
