Beware the racist, sexist interview software 🙅

In recent years, an increasing number of employers have been using virtual technology tools when interviewing candidates. (The number could be as high as 86 % according to a Gartner survey!)

And it makes sense: with hiring managers having to sift through hundreds of résumés per job listing, it was a matter of time before AI would “step in” to speed up the selection process. But how helpful is it really? 🤔

It turns out that, much like the humans that created it, AI isn’t always impartial in its candidate screenings. The Berkeley Haas Center for Equity, Gender, and Leadership reports the following:

• 44 % of AI systems display gender bias

• 26 % of AI systems display both gender and racial bias

• Facial recognition AI is far likelier (35 %) to misjudge the gender of people of color

🤖 So, when AI systems are used to screen pre-recorded video interviews and analyze things like facial expressions and tone of voice to identify the most suitable candidate, what happens is, in fact, the opposite. It’s not the ideal candidate that’s found, but the one that’s least likely to be on the receiving end of prejudice, IRL or not.

Besides being extremely unfair to jobseekers, this also gets in the way of companies hiring some exceptional talent.

AI chatbots CAN help you prepare for an interview

ChatGPT, Bing AI and Google Bard are all artificial intelligence chatbots 🤖 that have shaken up the world in the last year. And now jobseekers are using them to make their application stand out from the crowd, land an interview, and secure their dream job.

But how do you use chatbots to prepare for an interview? 🔒

You could start by entering the following prompts: 

• What are the typical questions asked in an interview for the role of [X]?

• What is the best response to a question about [X]?

• I'm preparing for a behavioral interview for [X] position in the [X] industry. Can you generate some potential questions that might be asked in this type of interview?

• I am seeking a leadership role and would like to highlight my skills in motivating and inspiring team members, handling conflict, and making difficult decisions during my interview. Can you generate a list of behavioral interview questions that focus on these areas?

• Draft an answer to the interview question [Question] using the STAR method. Here is my résumé: <paste résumé>.

Besides helping you prepare for answers to interview questions, you can also have a mock interview with the following prompt:

I am [Name], and I am appearing for a job interview for the role of a [X] at [Company]. Here is the job description: <paste job description>. Could you act as an interviewer and ask me questions one by one?
