THE BIG IDEA

Building frickin’ laser beams ⚡

cat watching laser show

Dr Evil would be delighted to hear about 28-year-old Austin Russell. Russell founded his company Luminar Technologies as a 17-year-old high school student. In 2021, it propelled him to the Forbes list as the world’s youngest self-made billionaire. He has a current estimated net worth of $ 1.6b. And he made it from “building frickin’ laser beams”! 🥼

Luminar Technologies was founded in 2012. Russell dropped out of Stanford University to build his business. He applied for and received the prestigious $ 100k Thiel Fellowship that year. This allowed him to focus on the startup.

Sorry, Dr Evil, but Luminar Technologies doesn’t strap lasers to the heads of murderous sharks! They focus on creating light detecting and ranging sensors for self-driving cars. Within two years of going public in 2020, the company reported $ 40.7m in revenue. To date, they maintain partnerships with Mercedes and Volvo. Luminar Technologies’ current market cap is $ 2.59b.

TODAY’S ADVICE

Intercultural communication tips

Workplace diversity has many benefits: it boosts creativity, problem solving and decision making, and can even reduce turnover. So, as more and more companies up their diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, what can we do as individuals to make our coworkers feel more welcome?

💭 Develop self-awareness. Look inwardly and notice if you have any biases. Then think about where they came from, and challenge them.

🌏 Interact with people from different backgrounds. Actively seek out interactions with people who might experience the world differently to you.

⛔ Steer clear of potentially sensitive topics. Some topics, like religion and politics, don’t really belong in the workplace.
