No work experience, voluntary resignation, interview cheat sheet, and more…

CareerAddict

Another week bites the dust! 💪 Let’s count down the hours to the weekend with:

  • Voluntary resignation: How a former teacher doubled her earnings.

  • Job search tips: Land a job with little relevant experience.

  • Interview preparation: Grab our handy interview question cheat sheet.

💡 QUOTE OF THE DAY: “Pleasure in the job puts perfection in the work.” — Aristotle, Ancient Greek philosopher

THE BIG IDEA

Teacher quits her job and doubles her earnings

I quit

Some people consider themselves professionally successful when they progress to a leadership position. Others do so when they hit a certain annual wage, or when they finally launch their own business. But not everyone has the same aspirations. For some, becoming successful in your career can mean something as simple as being happy. 😀

That’s the case for 31-year-old Maggie Perkins, who gave up her 8-year teaching career for a job at Costco. In 2022, she was working 60-hour workweeks as a middle and high school teacher and putting in significant amounts of unpaid overtime. A year later, at Costco, she’s making twice what she was before — and feeling more fulfilled than ever. But it’s not just her salary that’s responsible for this shift. 💰

“My work is no longer my identity,” Maggie happily declares. “I put energy into my job when I’m there, and I leave work at the office.” Can you relate to this sentiment?

📝 FRIDAY’S TO DO:

Plan something nice for the weekend 🤔 Consider going on a road trip with friends, taking your kids to the park, or visiting that dinosaur museum you’ve been wanting to go to for some time.

TODAY’S ADVICE

Looking for work without experience, aka:

finding a needle in a haystack

Maybe you’re a recent graduate looking for your first “grown-up” job. Or maybe you’ve been working for a few years and are currently seeking a career change. No matter the case, the following tips can make things easier when you’re job searching with little experience:

  • Use a skills-based résumé. Shift the focus to your transferable skills by dedicating a large section to them on your document. 📝

  • Do volunteer work. Volunteering is an excellent way to boost your employability, as it leads to more connections and lets you build your skills.

  • Invest more time in networking. Having contacts in multiple companies and organizations can make the job searching process much faster.
